Julie Bergman, Yoga Instructor
I grew up outside of Portland, Maine and then ventured out to California where I attended college and had 3 beautiful children. These children play an important role in finding yoga and its healing powers; I’d like to highlight that story in my bio since it truly is such an important piece of my life.
I began my journey with yoga after a very traumatic birth experience where I almost lost my own life and my son. When I arrived at my first yoga class in Davis, California I felt entirely intimidated. Looking around I couldn’t help but notice how flexible people were and how coordinated every outfit was. I was broken, insecure, and battling post-partum anxiety at that time and was immediately deflated; filled with a feeling that I did not belong there, with my borrowed mat and loose fitting postnatal t-shirt. But then the room became quiet and the teacher was steady and caring. She directed me toward my breath and her words were comforting, calming, and reassuring. For the first time in years I found my breath; for the first time in years I could calm the endless chatter in my mind and the doubt within my own self. I was fortunate to find an intentional and aware teacher that showed me how much yoga has to teach us all, and it inspired me in my journey to do so for others.
I came to yoga for movement, but I stayed with yoga for stillness. Like all others human beings I have faced obstacles, and also felt tremendous joy in life, and yoga is the grounding place I continue to come back to during the lowest of lows and highest of highs. It has been an integral part of my life as an adult and I am honored to be able to have found yoga and the beautiful community, and deep care, it fosters.
