For too long, society has sent the wrong message to sensitive people – that they need to “toughen up” and overcome their sensitivity. But new research shows embracing sensitivity can unlock emotional intelligence. High sensory-processing sensitivity is not a flaw, but a valuable trait found in roughly 20% of the population.

The term “highly sensitive person” (HSP) was coined by psychologist Elaine Aron to describe this subset who are uniquely wired to process information more deeply than others. Far from being a weakness, this sensitivity acts as a real superpower. HSPs notice rich details that others miss and can experience the world with profound depth and vividness.

HSPs and Empaths share many qualities. While overstimulation can occur in both, their perceptions can bring incredible strengths like higher creativity, more enriching relationships, and deeper appreciation for beauty. Empaths just know stuff through their feeling senses. It’s a form of intuitive – clairsentience.

For empaths, this intuitive emotional awareness is both a gift and a challenge. The ability to feel others’ experiences so vividly requires developing strong boundaries. Empaths must cultivate self-understanding to discern their own voice amidst the noise. With practice, they can manage their sensitivities while still opening to the profound human insights their gift provides.

Whether you’re an HSP, empath, or both, your depths are something to celebrate. Stop fighting your nature and embrace this rare sensibility. Learn to nurture your sensitivities with self-care. When understood and channeled positively, your enhanced perception can be an incredible gift.

Empath’s & HSP’s must learn to be in healthy relationship with the Self, first. This is the key to our Power. The Love that comes from that space is contagious! And, the healing power that emanates from Love helps to heal the wounded world we live in. ~ Diana
